The area

The Tutukaka coast features beautiful beaches (Matapouri, Whale Bay and Sandy Bay) and spectacular sea views abound along the Coast. Plus deep sea-fishing.  The Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers Club at Tutukaka is home to many world records for offshore catches.  Ngunguru is popular for picnics and swimming.

Tutukaka is a base for diving trips to Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve and dive wrecks Tui and Waikato. It is the gateway to the Poor Knights Island Marine Reserve - 24 km Whale Bayoff the Tutukaka Coast which is considered by Jacques Cousteau to be one of the world's top five dive locations. The northern-most island group in the Hauraki Gulf, the Poor Knights consist of Tawhiti-Rahi and Aorangi, two quite large islands.  Landing is prohibited, but they are prime bird-watching, scuba diving and snorkelling areas.  This is a world renowned marine reserve and one of the foremost diving locations. Waters are clear and unpolluted and Diving near the Poor Knights islandsundersea caves support large schools of varied species of fish.  Boats leave daily from Tutukaka.  The surrounding waters also support marlin and other big-game fish.
